The benefits of bilingual education are undeniable, whether it’s improving academic performance or increasing executive function. However, each language has its own unique advantages that give its speakers a particular advantage in one area or another. In this article, we’ll take a look at German and why it’s a great choice for bilingual learners.
Number of speakers: There are 95 million native speakers of German, making it the second most widely spoken language in Europe after English. Worldwide, there are an additional 10-15 million speakers who speak German as a second language, and tens of millions more who speak it as a foreign language. With over 100 million speakers, many of whom are not based in Germany, German is often in the top 10 most spoken languages worldwide, and it’s incredibly widespread. Learning German ensures that you can communicate with this diverse group of speakers!
In 2011, Germany was ranked third in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings. In its 2011 edition, the Academic Ranking of World Universities listed six of its 100 institutions based in Germany. German universities aren’t just good – they’re also quite inexpensive! Thanks to subsidized tuition, many universities are essentially free to attend. Learning German is a key component of being accepted into and thriving at some of these top universities!
Economic Power Germany has the largest economy in Europe, the fourth-largest GDP in the world, and is among the top ten trading partners of both the United States and the United Kingdom, both global powers. Additionally, with 29 German companies on the Fortune 500 list, the country is tied with France for fourth place for countries with the most companies on the list. By studying in Germany, students gain connections and life skills that may eventually allow them to become part of the workforce in one of the world’s most powerful economies.
Easy Transition for English Speakers English and German have similar origins, which are found in Proto-Germanic languages. Today, many words in English are similar to words in German, and many German grammar rules can be found in English as well. This makes it an easier second language for native English speakers to learn than French or other Romance languages, and certainly easier to learn than a non-European language.
